Halitosis, usually known as bad breath, is an embarrassing health condition in which foul smelling odour comes out from the mouth. The odour usually originates

from the mouth or throat  and it is caused by naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth that are there to aid digestion.
In the process of these bacteria helping to break down protein in the mouth, they deposit foul smelling substances which when left unattended to, will result in bad breath. Other causes of halitosis are:
  • Poor Oral hygiene: Inadequate and improper oral care like brushing properly and frequently, can easily result to bad breath.
  • Dry Mouth: There should be adequate saliva production in the mouth. Food odours are usually removed by saliva flow in the mouth. However, for those who suffer from dryness in the mouth, it could be a bit difficult to remove any bad odour of food from their mouth with the aid of saliva. Some few causes of dryness of the mouth include drinking of alcohol, speaking for a long time, smoking or even snoring.
  • Illness or diseases: Some illness or diseases can also trigger halitosis, such as lung disease, kidney, cancer, respiratory tract disease, gum disease and many more.
  • Food: The type of food we eat can also make the mouth smell. Foods like garlic, onions, even sugar because they make the bacteria very comfortable to breed in the mouth.
